What sensations do colors give in the spaces of my home? Posted on May 24, 2024 By Hakeemdev To have a better understanding of how colors work, and what qualities and psychological effects they have according to their application, it is important to make a brief introduction about them. Colors are divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. Primary colors: Those whose tone is pure and cannot be achieved by mixing other colors (red, blue, and yellow). Secondary colors: Those colors that are the result of the combination of two primary colors in equal parts (green, orange, and violet). Tertiary colors: These result from the dominant application of one of the primary colors in its composition. In addition to this color classification, we can also provide light or shadow. The light is achieved with the use of white, which lowers the intensity of colors, generating pastel colors, while the black color will darken all colors. It is important to keep in mind that colors are classified by temperature into warm colors, cold colors, and neutral colors. These characteristics will greatly influence our psyche according to the personality, and mood of the person or task to be performed in the space. Warm colors (Yellow, orange, red, yellow ocher, among similar ones): They are hot colors, you find them in fire, for example. Its psychological association is with heat. Cold colors: Such as blue, turquoise, green, violet, etc., are associated with colder climates or the sea. Its psychological association is with the cold. Neutral colors: Grays and browns, which, depending on the predominant color in the combination, can be applied with all colors and provide rest to the eyes. Knowing this information, we can apply color psychology appropriately. We share some general characteristics by color. Yellow color: Symbolizes energy, joy, and emotion. A pure tone can activate the creative side of the user, however, excessive use of this color can irritate us. If we apply yellow mixed with black (mustard), the meaning changes completely, calling for envy, uncertainty, and stillness. Blue color: Tranquility, freshness, and intelligence, as well as security. It is the color of logic and communication, also associated with the sea and the sky. It is used to convey confidence and security, but if the wrong shade of blue is used (very dark), it can mark distance and seriousness. Red color: Accelerates the heart rate, generating an increase in adrenaline. Color of passion, which is why it is widely used in revolutionary movements. It is ideal to place it in low-income areas where good physical performance is required or place it in decorative elements to increase activity in very phlegmatic people. It is not recommended to use it for hyperactive or aggressive people. Green color: Color of nature, hope, fertility, and youth. In darker tones, it can be associated with money, prestige, and power. It is used in some brands to reinforce their care for nature, but in very dark tones it can mean terror or anger. Violet color: Elegance and sophistication. It is associated with mystery, nostalgia, and spirituality. Furthermore, it is used in stages of change, since it generates greater openness to the new and less resistance to change. Orange color: Color of fun, unusual. It attracts a lot of attention and is a very fun color. Likewise, it is a tone that whets the appetite but can bother the eyes when looking for a long time. It is widely used in fast food establishments, since it is warm, calls to enter, welcomes you into the room, and after a short period you want to leave. Black: Represents elegance, objectivity, and luxury, but can also represent death. The application of this color will be reinforced with the color that accompanies it. White color: Innocence, peace, virtue, it has no negative connotation. It is timeless, so it does not go out of style, likewise, it adds spaciousness to spaces and symbolizes new beginnings. From this base information, it will be easier for you to choose colors for environments in any space in your house or project; such as a child’s bedroom, the dining room, the master bedroom or work area, etc. You could use complementary colors to help you choose colors. They are those colors that are in an opposable position within the color wheel. Remember that this information is general and that each experience or experience of the person can associate a color tone with specific scenes, favorable or not, as well as the sensations, emotions, and meaning that a tone generates can vary according to the individual’s culture.
